Bitcoin Mining company Riot Blockchain announced launching a pilot test for a liquid cooling technology to be used for bitcoin mining hardware, which would help develop a solution for mining at the places with higher temperature.

The pilot project would be launched in Texas.

Bitcoin Mining company RIOT to Test Liquid Immersion Cooling for Bitcoin Mining

As per the news, RIOT would initiate an 8 Megawatt immersion technology testing to help develop cost effective mining that offers high productivity.

Jeff McGonega, the company’s CEO, shared with Coindesk that they would experiment with more extensive scale deployment if the experiment is successful. They would implement immersion technology at places with a warmer climate where there are challenges in mining due to cooling issues.

Bitcoin and cryptocurrency mining hardware is extremely heavyweight, and the mining machines often get extremely hot, which requires cooling to increase sustainability. Humidity and heat often pose challenges in maintenance and running the mining hardware; thus, a cooling mechanism is needed.

While Air cooling is used mostly in bitcoin mining, a more efficient and cost-effective method like liquid cooling can be highly beneficial for the miners to increase their profits.  Liquid cooling also enhances the machines’ overall efficiency as the usable hash rate per machine would increase substantially, the devices become more sustainable, and mines would be able to utilize their space more efficiently. The maintenance of liquid immersion mining machines may, however, require more attention.  While air cooling facilities are widely used in the mining industry, experimenting with the fluid cooling mechanism is a step forward.

The various mining firms are looking for measures to improve the mining operations in areas with a hot and humid climate. Liquid immersion technology can be helpful in increasing the performance of the mining hardware. The liquid immersion also reduces the heat, humidity, and dust concerns and improves the overall efficiency of the machines. Some miners already use the evaporation technique to ward off the heating challenges.

Enigma and Lancium are two energy software and mining hardware suppliers taking part in the Riot liquid immersion technology pilot project. It is worth noting that Riot has fared well in the last one year, with its shares soaring as Bitcoin reaches its all-time high.
